Mahindra is working on a new entry-level thar with smaller wheels, lower kerb weight, improved fuel efficiency, 2WD, and a new 1.5L petrol engine.

According to the recent reports emerged on the internet, in relation with Mahindra is working on developing a new base variant powering with a TUV300 powertrain 1.5 Litre three-cylinder petrol engine, coupled with a manual transmission as standard and an optional automatic gearbox system. Although it is not confirmed about the same powertrain used in TUV300, it is likely to be a little tune-up. Along with this, a new entry-level variant available with 2WD configuration only, 4WD will be offered on top-end trims and could be around 100Kg lighter than the ongoing model.

Further, the report also suggested that the new base variant likely to produce lesser torque and produce better fuel economy compared with the current model. The new variant comes with smaller wheel size and other proportions will remain identical with the current model. Mahindra launched second-generation Thar last year, and since the launch, the demand for the SUV kept on increasing month-on-month. Last month, Mahindra retails 3,406 units of thar, its highest monthly sales domestic tally ever.

In just over six months Mahindra received more than 50,000 bookings of Thar and the production has been ramped up to meet the demand. While due to the second wave of virus and the shortage of semiconductors the waiting period of off-roader SUVs has been increased to 1 year now. Currently, Mahindra retails Thar with a starting price of Rs 12.12 lakh for the base trim and which goes up to Rs 14.17 lakh for top-end trim (Ex-showroom). Although, initially was launched with a base price of Rs 9.80 lakh in October, and Mahindra discontinued the 6-seater base AX trim in December 2020.
