Delhi Traffic police department on Friday, 11/06/2021 announced a revision in the speed limits for all the vehicles in Delhi, this step was taken by the authorities to ensure the safety of all driving or non-driving public. These change in speed limits were long due as the older limits were applied a long way back when the automobiles and pedestrians on roads were quite less as compared to today.

Before getting into details of the announcement it is important to know which type of vehicle you use as each type has been specified with a particular speed limit. Now coming to the point, all the vehicles under category M1 comprising of all the passenger cars (hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs, Jeeps), taxis and any other cab service like OLA and Uber, are getting a maximum speed limit set to 70 km/h for highways and 4-lane roads, while the same goes for any 2-wheelers whose maximum speed limit is set to 50-60 km/h. For vehicles coming in categories, M2 and M3 which comprises of Vans and other Medium Delivery Vehicles the maximum speed limit are set to 50-60Km/h. while any other type of vehicle which doesn’t come in the M1, M2 or M3 category will get a speed limiter at 40 km/h. however these speed limit only applies to main road or highways, for any other road like residential locations, commercial courts, service roads/lanes, and other minor roads, the speed limits are set at 30 km/h for every vehicle, regardless of the category.

These speed limits are now in action and anyone who is found disobeying these speed limits will be fined heavily as per the Motor Vehicles Act of India, 1988. However, the traffic police department also stated that if a car’s speed limit exceeds under 5% of the limit, then they are liable to be excused but exceeding 5% and above will cost you deeply.
